Interior Moments

The Fat Radish, New York. Photo:  Alice Gao

Here are some different interior moments that have been inspiring some jobs of mine lately. For example, I am working on a kitchen that has a slight country feel and the interior above with its grey-green T & G panel and white subway tiles has been an influence. It doesn't take much for inspiration to strike.

A Floral Affair Woodland Inspiration

A Floral Affair Woodland Inspiration

Today we feature a lovilee styled wedding shoot by Debbie Lourens Photography, showing that the Woodlands really feel can also be paired with a far more bohemian and colourful flare. I fell in adore with the flowers and stationary used, and the cakes, nicely, you can have a appear yourself!

‘We incorporated some shades of the Pantone forecasted colour for 2014, Radiant Orchid, and paired it with colours we believed develop the rich opulence we so preferred. The outcome was a lot more than we could have hoped for displaying that adding a tiny bit of extravagance to divine bohemian style could compliment the wealthy opulence of nature. Proving that a lot more, can also be a lot more.’ – Debbie Lourens

Floral Woodland Inspiration

The woodland wedding theme is a wonderful chance to deviate away from the standard flowers that are discovered inside bridal bouquets and as floral decoration around your venue. Deviating away from the norm is a fantastic way to make your wedding stand out and be memorable to your guests.

There is tons of inspiration for your bridal bouquet but usually woodland wedding flower bouquets are heavily influenced by berries – these are great as they add a pop of colour to the bouquet and when contrasted against brown intertwining twigs, foliage, lavender and other flowers and plants it makes for a beautiful bridal bouquet.

For example, the jam jar is used by nearly every single bride and decorating them is a favoured DIY wedding activity.

You can get thin, flexible pieces of bark and wrap these about the jam jar leaving some of the jar exposed to let for the light to come via if you are going to location a candle in the centre, or you can do a similar issue with flexible twigs.

Artificial moss is a excellent versatile material to work with and you can develop lots of special and quirky table centrepieces with it. You can shape the moss into all sorts of different shapes such as love hearts and location them on the centre of a table, maybe on prime or arranged near some tiny tree stumps with the bride and groom’s name carved into them.

Pinecones naturally have lots of gaps in them, ideal for slipping in a name card. This makes pinecones excellent for woodland table spot name card holders so your guests know where they are sitting.

The Wedding Cake

For most, distinguishing the woodland theme inside your wedding cake can seem like an impossible task, but the key is all in the decoration and presentation. For example, putting the cake on an artificial cake stand is the very best location to start off.

Woodland Inspired Wedding Favours

Let your guests take house of bit of the woodland with some inventive wedding favours. Potpourri is a excellent woodland inspired wedding favour that lets your wedding guests take home the scent of the woodland. Or, why don’t you place together miniature bird’s nests and fill them with Cadbury’s mini eggs for an edible favour that leaves a sweet ending to the large day.

"Fly Aweigh" with us to a land of "Splendor"!

We are “sew” in love with the Fly Aweigh and Splendor collections from Riley Blake Designs, available in our store! Made of 100 percent cotton, the Splendor collection (designed by Lila Tueller) is fun and feminine, while the Fly Aweigh collection (designed by Samantha Walker) is great for boy’s clothes, home decor or even accessories. Below, we’ve gathered together a few project ideas for you using these fabrics:

Fly Aweigh Lobster

Fly Aweigh Flags

Fly Aweigh Boats

With tiny red lobsters on a white background, this design is perfect for summer! Use it to stitch up a Betsey Apron, placemats, napkins or potholders. It would also look cute on this Reversible Romper for a child, or on a decorative pillow or beach bag.

Add a whimsical splash of color to your projects with this fabric. Featuring little flag designs on a blue background, it can be used to stitch up these "Easy Fit Pants" for a Child or Adult. Or, create a comfy travel pillow for your favorite person on-the-go.

This design has “little boy” written all over it, doesn’t it? With various boat designs speckled on a blue background, this fabric would look great on these Louey Boxers or this Child’s Bowling Shirt. It would also look precious on a baby bubble or romper, or even window curtains or pillows for a nautical-themed bedroom.

These three fabrics also pair together perfectly. Mix and match them on this Tailored Tote to use as a sewing bag or diaper bag. Or, try them on this Boxy Bag to use as a travel tote or makeup bag. The coordination possibilities are endless!

There is so much you can do with these two floral fabrics – one a fun paisley, the other a “ceramic tile” flower design. They would look precious on little girl’s dresses, such as Sew Beautiful classics like Frannie or Summer Separates, or Sis Boom favorites like the Maddie Top/Dress, Molly Peasant or Sophie Tunic. Try one on the Sis Boom Baby Bubble, or make a stylish pair of women’s shorts using the Tommy Boxer Shorts pattern. These also may be used to make fashionable accessories or home décor items and are fabulous for mixing and matching!

What would you make with these fabrics? Let us know in the comments! :)

2013 Christmas Tree Inspiration from HGTV

If you are open to new ideas, just about anything can be a Christmas tree because it's all in the presentation.

Funky and fun miniature trees are perfect in a grouping on a sofa table, buffet or even the kitchen counter.

They're made out of ribbon or fabric-covered foam topiaries that are hot-glued into containers and adorned with anything from Christmas light bulbs to feathers to glittery beaded garland.

Since the best gifts come in small packages, these are just the trees for those items!

Here are some other tree-inspired ideas:

  • Make a hanging ribbon tree for a corner, the center of an entry or even above the folding counter in a laundry room.

  • Use ribbon to tie macramé rings in a variety of sizes together. Wrap each with low-wattage, UL-approved white holiday lights that don't generate heat. Drape beautiful ribbons over the rings to create the foliage streamers, which cover the structure but allow the glow from the lights to shine through.

  • For just a whisper of the holidays in your home, purchase several cherry blossom branches from a florist. The flowers give the impression of tufts of snow along the branches, and when placed in a very large glass container, the bouquet can be high enough to allow plenty of room for stacks of beautifully wrapped Christmas packages underneath.

  • Use carefully wrapped surprises as part of your holiday decor. One of the best ways to do this is to use paper in colors that either stand out or blend in with the existing decor of your home. A collection of pink and silver packages is certainly eye catching. If the packages look too good to unwrap, use empty boxes and display your creations again next year.

  • Turn a white Christmas tree into a snowman (or an elf, Santa and even a reindeer) using felt and fabric for his eyes and nose, top hat and a scarf to keep him warm.

Fall and Holiday Sewing Inspiration

October/November 2013
Fall is in the air, and the holiday season is right around the corner! Our newest issue of Sew Beautiful combines both fall and holiday sewing inspiration, so when you're working on fall projects you can be actively planning your special holiday garments, too.

Projects include a lovely lace overlay skirt, an elegant three-dimensional appliquéd leaf table runner and a delightful "Happy Scarecrows" picture smocking design. We're also proud to share our contest winners from the 2012 Martha Pullen Sewing Awards and much, much more. Read below for more about a few of our favorite projects this issue has to offer:

Martha Pullen Sewing Award Winners - We received more than 150 entries for Martha's 2012 Sewing Awards, and a panel of judges from Martha Pullen Company and Sew Beautiful magazine individually assessed each one. Winners were chosen in seven different categories. Pictured above is the grand prize winner, a flower girl dress created by Martha Broyles of Ballwin, Mo.

Lace Overlay Skirt - I (Amelia) based this design on a tweed skirt with an orange guipure lace overlay I saw in a booth at a sewing expo in Michigan. I started with a basic, straight pencil skirt pattern and used a wide butterscotch galloon and a coordinate suiting for the underskirt.

Happy Scarecrows: Jack and Jill Straw Smocking Plates - With crisp fall weather comes the autumn harvest and the delightful and ever-so-practical emergence of the scarecrow. Being one of the most familiar figures in the American rural landscape, this ragged character is a natural motif for back-to-school apparel. Let Gwen Milner's Jack and Jill Straw smocking design put a smile on the face of your little adventurer(s). Jack stands in a cornfield while Jill poses among the sunflowers.

Appliquéd Heirloom Christmas Tree - Christmas memories are like having treasured heirlooms in our hearts for a lifetime. Create a cherished memory for your little girl by making her a holiday jumper accented with this appliquéd tree. Designed by Trisha Smith, the tree is decorated with a tatted garland and then embellished with Swarovski Hot Fix Crystals.

Green & Gold Silk Elegance Smocking Design - Smocked in an elegant diamond and serpentine pattern in glorious gold and traditional shades of red, this smocking design from Cheryl R. Davidson captures the essence of the season brilliantly. Pair it with our "Pascale" Sew Beautiful Collection Pattern and luxurious green silk dupioni - as pictured here - and you'll have a dress made for holiday celebrations.

Quick peek at Atlanta loves..

Just a quick peek at my weekend in review from my instagram pics of Atlanta.

I had a really great time and was very happy with my first trip to the show.  There were so many fun new vendors to discover and meet.  As I sift through my pile of emails and catch up on everything here at the office I promise to post more on the great displays and lines that were there.
