“To the façade a massive glass surface is used to maximize the amount of light flowing in. Following entering, the 10 meter higher volume remains open and a 24 meter-lengthy passage welcomes guests with a sloped glass surface at the finish which tricks the vision. On the proper hand side the core functions are positioned: initial a lounge with a 24m2 glass wall presenting the visual ID of the business, then a cloakroom hidden by ‘floating’ glass doors and lastly the rebel pink glass covered cafe like kitchen and the mechanical space behind.”

“Above, a wooden box is cantilevered, a house within the residence, which serves as an auditorium with 32 seats and an integrated interpreter-cabin for conferences. The box can be entered from the upstairs guest region, through two green glass bridges. The next bridge gives access to the fitting area exactly where clinical coaching is delivered and the newest lenses can be seasoned.”

Horst Architects lately redesigned this loft apartment perched atop a rocky seaside promontory in Corona del Mar, California.
Perched atop a rocky seaside promontory, this loft renovation is an efficient response to the difficulty of restricted space with simplicity and restraint getting the guiding principles of the design remedy. The customers requested a design which would accommodate workplace operate by day and intimate social and familial gatherings by evening. The interior spaces have been entirely reconfigured into an open program evolving around a double height entry volume containing the principal stairway. Sliding partitions and fabric behind frameless glass have replaced classic signifies of enclosure and spatial transition. A sculptural interplay of material, light and form define spaces, which are both intimate and communal, sheltering but expansive. Indoor and outside living is integrated by frameless, bi-folding doors. Windows are positioned to embrace the view of the harbor, while second skin systems such as wood shutters mediate the late afternoon sun and provide privacy. The altering play of light on surfaces, the breezes that move via and around the structure, the touch and smell of walls and gardens, the play of colors, the sound of spaces all play a element in the reception of architecture as it is lived in, and are important determinants in our well being.

The forthcoming exhibition MOBILIA, at the Atomium in Brussels, that runs from February 12 till June 15 2014, focuses on the talent of architects whose function, because the late nineteenth century, has evolved beyond the style of buildings, to the creation of furniture and objects. Belgium hasn’t bucked this trend. Some emblematic movements of modernist architecture had been initiated, among others, by Belgian architects Victor Bourgeois (photo n°1) and Huib Hoste with Le Corbusier. They have been particularly active in the course of the 1st International Congress of Contemporary Architecture (CIAM) in 1928. Yet the story remains reasonably unknown to the basic public. Los Altos Hills Residence by Aleck Wilson Architects

Los Altos Hills Residence was an extensive renovation to a dated hillside home in Los Altos Hills, California by architecture studio Aleck Wilson Architects. The program was to open up the home to the view, to extend and integrate the decks with indoor-outdoor living and reorganize the flow of the plan. The architects sought to create a soothing palette, with carefully detailed materials. Striking features of the home include the glass central stairway that has an ethereal transparency that illuminates the interior of the three-story home. Custom stained wood slat cladding emphasizes circulation walls and creates a balanced counterpoint to the naturally lit stair. Custom lighting, furnishings and materials were selected by interior design firm The Wiseman Group and integrated with the architecture throughout the home.
