Florence de Dampierre's French Chic Living

Florence de Dampierre's French Chic Living

French houses just seem to ooze with charm—and their inhabitants, despite busy schedules, regularly entertain at home; something that I have long found most inspiring.
So, needless to say, I was super excited when I found out that my friend Florence de Dampierre was writing newest book French Chic Living (Rizzoli).
An esteemed interior designer and antiques expert, Florence is the author of several books including French Chic and Walls: The Best of Decorative Treatments. For most of her adult life the French-born de Dampierre has been sharing the secrets of French chic with close friends and clients; now, lucky for us, it’s all in one wonderful tome.
Florence is a natural to tackle this subject. Having had the privilege of being a guest at one of her signature poolside lunches (with ingredients fresh from the garden), it is both a chic and casual affair—always fun and very relaxing.
Packed with time-tested advice and conventional Gallic wisdom, French Chic Living offers suggestions for everything from setting up the bar and brewing the perfect cup of tea, to selecting a variety of cheeses for the well-balanced platter.
There are tips for polishing silver and repairing chipped porcelain, as well as simple concoctions for making your own all-natural beauty products and home remedies. From stocking the pantry, to washing and storing delicate linens to cleaning wooden and stone surfaces, this inventive hybrid (think “Heloise Helpful Hints” meets “Parisian Chic”) shares foolproof tips for creating a warm, well running and inviting home.

DIY Fabric Art For The Interior Walls

DIY Fabric Art For The Interior Walls

Today I wanted to show you a quick and inexpensive way to dress up your walls with DIY fabric art. I love the look and they are so easy to create! There are so many choices of fabric out there… the possibilities are endless! Here’s how I made my fabric art.
DIY fabric art on iheartnaptime.com ...super easy way to fill a big space! #homedecor

DIY fabric art

Supplies needed:
  • Frames (found mine at Ikea)
  • Fabric (I used Jo-Ann HGTV fabric)
  • Hot Glue
  • Hammer and nails or command strips
Instructions:
The first thing you’re going to do is determine how big you want your frames. I wanted my frames pretty big, so I picked up four of these white frames from Ikea. I have seen similar ones at Target too.
Ikea frames
Next I removed the cardboard from the frame and taped them to the wall. This helped me decide where to place the frames on the wall and how far to space them out.

Next I cut 1/8 inch off one edge of the cardboard to allow room for the fabric when placing it back in the frame. Then I cut out a piece of fabric about 2 inches wider than the cardboard. After that I wrapped the cardboard like a present with the fabric, hot gluing as I went and then I placed the piece back in the frame.

After I was finished, I hung up my new fabric art and admired it on my wall. This project took me less than an hour from start to finish. Can’t beat that! The possibilities really are endless with this simple piece of decor. Get creative! :D

Shabby Chic Bedding Tricks & Tips

Shabby Chic Bedding Tricks & Tips

Vintage style bedrooms are becoming more and more trendy thanks to designers like Rachel Ashwell who popularized the term shabby chic in the 1980s. If you're planning to incorporate this style in your bedroom space, here are the most important things you need to know about this wonderful type of bedding.
Why You'll Love It
Shabby chic bedding is a great option whether you are on a small or large budget. While of course there are very high-end choices, there are many more inexpensive ones. You could even shop second-hand, however when it comes to bedding new is always the best choice.

And since there is such a high demand, many manufacturers have come out with their own shabby chic lines. This is perfect for the consumer since it means high quality bedding that is brand new but has that vintage style and look.
Purchasing décor to match your bedding can be a ton of fun and super cheap too. Shopping in thrift stores and at garage sales you can almost always find well worn items that complement this style perfectly. And of course online there are many brand new ones that are made to look old, for example, mirrors, frames, tables, etc. Unlike other themes, with shabby chic mixing and matching looks fabulous.

The Most Common Colors
While of course there are really an unlimited number of colors available, there are a few which are the most popular. White is without a doubt the most common, and it is elegant, easy to match, and clean looking. Yellow, blue and red are also very often used particularly with whites as well as off-whites and with floral patterns. And don't forget pink shabby chic bedding which will surely make your room more feminine. Pink and white also happens to make a gorgeous combination.
Options For Every Age
Luckily, there are sets and individual items available for every age group. Shabby chic baby bedding is ideal for parents who have a thing for vintage. To make things even more convenient sets include things like bumper pads, coverlets, sheets, and many times accessories like diaper bags all in shabby chic designs. For kids, teens, and adults sets really are the cheapest way to shop and there are sheet, duvet cover, quilt, and comforter sets to help even the pickiest shoppers enjoy this style with ease.
As you can see, the fact that is so appealing to so many people has made shabby chic bedding an even more affordable and durable option than ever before. From white to pink and in a ton of combinations and patterns you can have a lot of fun choosing and accessorizing your bedding. But of course don't forget to check out sets for value.

2012 Living Room Design Styles From HGTV

Mid-Century Modern

Mid-century modern style is characterized by simplicity and natural shapes. It is often emphasized by ample windows, an open floor plan and the idea of bringing the outdoors in.

Asian

Designer Jane Ellison took a unique approach when designing this Asian-style living room. Subtle Oriental elements are represented with the porcelain blue-and-white wares, tatami mats, brass sculptures, bamboo shades and elegant gold sofa upholstery.

Contemporary

Contemporary living rooms feature softened, rounded lines and contain neutral elements with pops of bold color.

Eclectic

If you can't choose one style, go eclectic. It's a mixture of different styles and periods, but pulls the look together through a similar texture, finish, pattern or color.

Mid-Century Modern

The mid-20th century design movement left us with sleek and modern furnishings actively used in homes today. Designer Robin Callan celebrated the rugged limestone focal wall with mid-century modern furnishings and a large piece of artwork that ties in the room's diverse color palette.

Cottage

The 20-foot stone fireplace features warm lighting and stunning display shelves to really set the tone of this cozy cottage-style living room. For an elegant and chic approach to cottage living, designer Shane Inman used a simple neutral and pastel color palette and decorated with minimal accessories, all in a crisp ivory hue.

Country

Rich, vibrant hues and dark wood furnishings emit visual warmth in this country-style living room. Pale yellow walls tone down the bold sofa and reflect the softer shades visible in the area rug's floral design. Rustic decorative stars pull in the country feel in a simple and subtle way. Design by Helen Richardson

Mediterranean

This warm living room exudes true Mediterranean-inspired elegance through its structure and decor. With dramatic interior architectural elements, the living room design is kept simple yet refined with a touch of Old World Spanish flair. Design by Vanessa DeLeon

Modern

Designer Andreas Charalambous created an ultra-modern masterpiece in this two-story urban loft. The living room is especially ideal for entertaining, with two-story atrium windows, an entirely open floor plan and convertible furniture that can transform into sofas, sectionals and interconnected club-style seating. Far from bland, these white walls provide the perfect backdrop to an energetic display of patterns.

Old World

Nothing short of magnificent, this Old World living room pulls in elegant, Italian-inspired design elements to create an over-the-top and illustrious gathering spot. The hand-painted cathedral ceiling and Renaissance-style furnishings make a bold statement, creating a look that will immediately take you back in time. Design by Lori Venners. Traditional

This well-known design style will instantly make you feel right at home. Designer Linda Woodrum created an elegant yet functional living room with a soothing color palette of ivory, navy and pale blue. Simple, understated furnishings mirror the classic, casual and comfortable elements associated with traditional interiors.

Transitional

This vibrant living room successfully mixes classic traditional details and accessories with contemporary fixtures and hues to create a one-of-a-kind space. Designer Shelly Riehl David used sunny lime and fuchsia as her unique color inspiration. Beyond the color palette, the room's most striking elements are the dramatic floor-to-ceiling lime draperies and the grand carved stone mantelpiece in a contrasting shade of ivory.
